About DairyBase

DairyBase is an investment by New Zealand dairy farmers through the dairy industry good levy and operated by DairyNZ. It is supported by the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and the New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management.

DairyBase is a web based software tool that enables accountants and consultants to analyse farm physical information and financial statements. This provides an overall business view from a management perspective rather than solely a tax view.  There is the added benefit of being able to consolidate information across multiple entities (eg trust, partnerships and companies) to give a single business analysis. DairyBase also provides benchmark data allowing dairy farmers to compare their performance.

Ensuring a farmer's business is sustainable and profitable requires effective management of both financial and physical resources.  DairyBase doesn’t tell farmers how to use their resources but it analyses the resources they have, the way they're using them and, by way of benchmarking, compares their use of resources with other farm businesses. Discussing their DairyBase reports with their accountant/consultant will help dairy farmers determine how best to utilise their resources.

The aim of DairyBase is to standardise terminology used in physical and financial reporting within the dairy industry and to ensure consistency in calculations – for terms like Return on Assets (ROA) and Operating Profit (OP).  It also provides the industry with a database that could provide relevant industry statistics.
